Berwyn Heights Public Works treats and clears snow and ice on Town-maintained streets during winter weather events to support safe travel for emergency vehicles, motorists, and pedestrians. Snow operations are treated as an emergency function and take priority over many other public works tasks. Try to avoid driving as much as possible when there is snow or ice. If you must drive make sure to drive slowly, keep a safe distance from other drivers, and leave extra room when braking in case of ice.
Parking During Snow Events
Residents are strongly encouraged to move vehicles off Town roadways during snow and ice events. Parked vehicles significantly limit the Town’s ability to plow streets curb-to-curb and may result in snowpack, ice buildup, or reduced roadway width. Streets with vehicles left in the roadway may not be fully cleared. When available, vehicles may be parked on grass areas during snow events, provided they do not block sidewalks, driveways, fire hydrants, or emergency access.
Berwyn Heights Snow Plowing
When snow or ice shows signs of sticking to the ground, Public Works begins applying salt/ ice-melt to roads and walkways. Plowing of roads begins once snow accumulation reaches 2”. Residents can assist Public Works by moving their vehicles off the road during snow plowing operations, where possible.
| Amount of Snow | Time to Make Roads Passable | Time to Fully Clear Roads |
| <4 inches | 4-6 hours | 1 day |
| 4-6 inches | 6-8 hours | 2-3 days |
| >6 inches | 8+ hours | 3-5 days |
Winter Weather Event Tips:
Sidewalks- Property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 48 hours after the snowfall ends to ensure safe pedestrian access.
Driveways- Snow plowing may push snow into driveway entrances. Residents are encouraged to wait until the street has been plowed before fully clearing driveways.
Plow Safety- Please keep a safe distance from snowplows. Plows may stop, turn, or back up unexpectedly and can discharge snow and salt.
Trash & Recycling- Refuse and recycling should be placed out on the regular collection day unless otherwise announced. Severe weather may cause delays; residents should monitor Town website & social media for updates.
Be Aware of Fire Hydrants During Significant Snowfall
When fire hydrants are blocked by snow it is harder for the fire department to respond to emergencies. The Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department gives some tips:
- Remove any snow and ice from the hydrant.
- Clear a wide perimeter (3 feet) around the fire hydrant.
- Clear a path from the street to the fire hydrant.
