Parks & Recreation

Headed by the Councilmember for Parks, Recreation & Civic Affairs (PRECA), the Department supports and promotes recreational and educational programs by coordinating the activities of Town committees and civic clubs and advocating for the improvement of the Town’s parks and playgrounds.

Functions:

The PRECA Councilmember/ Department Head

1. Proposes a budget to fund recreational activities.

2. Manages a volunteer appreciation program.

3. Acts as a standing member and advisor to the Parks & Recreation Council.

4. Liaises with, and supports, civic organizations.

5. Liaises with local schools and educational organizations to promote educational programs for students.

6. Represents the Town with State and County agencies as well as non-profit organizations, such as Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Anacostia Trails Heritage Area/ MD Milestones (ATHA) and others.

7. Publicizes and/ or assists in organizing civic educational programs.
