Cleaner. Safer. More Efficient.
Beginning in July 2026, the Town of Berwyn Heights will begin rolling out Town-issued refuse carts for household trash collection as part of Public Works' transition toward standardized automated refuse collection. Standardized refuse carts can be mechanically lifted and emptied into our Town refuse trucks, reducing the need for Public Works staff to manually lift trash bags and containers. The transition is expected to improve collection efficiency, reduce workplace injuries, and provide more consistent refuse collection service throughout the community.
In addition to improving operations, the new Town-issued carts feature attached lids that help contain refuse, reduce litter, and deter rodents and other pests. Constructed of durable, heavy-duty materials designed for municipal collection programs, the carts are built to withstand years of regular use while providing a cleaner and more secure refuse collection system for residents.
Choose the Cart Size That Fits Your Household
Residents may request one of two cart sizes:
64-Gallon Refuse Cart
- Ideal for larger households
- Holds more refuse between collection days
- Provides additional capacity for families and households generating higher volumes of trash
32-Gallon Refuse Cart
- Ideal for smaller households
- Easier to maneuver and store
- Suitable for residents generating lower volumes of refuse or those who prefer a lighter cart
All Town-issued refuse carts will be brown, clearly labeled for trash collection, and display the Town seal.
Why Is the Town Making This Change?
The standardized refuse cart program will:
- Improve collection efficiency and route operations
- Reduce repetitive lifting injuries and physical strain on Public Works employees
- Create cleaner and more uniform refuse collection throughout Town
- Improve workplace safety
- Reduce litter and help deter rodents and pests
- Align Berwyn Heights with neighboring municipalities that already provide standardized refuse and recycling containers
Phased Rollout Beginning This Summer
The program will be implemented in phases beginning in July 2026. Residents are encouraged to voluntarily sign up for a Town-issued refuse cart during the initial rollout period.
As the transition progresses, Public Works staff will begin identifying non-compatible refuse containers during collection operations and providing educational notices to residents. Over time, standardized Town-issued refuse carts may become the required container for residential refuse collection as the Town completes its transition to automated collection practices.
