Tree City

What is a Tree City?

Being designated a Tree City USA means our community is recognized for its commitment to urban forestry and sustainable tree care. The title is awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation to cities that meet four core standards of sound urban forest management.

The Four Standards of Tree City USA:
  1. A Tree Board or Department
A group of citizens or a city department dedicated to the care and management of the community’s trees. In the Town of Berwyn Heights, this is our Public Works Department under the leadership of Director Brad Pudner.
  2. A Tree Care Ordinance
Local legislation that provides clear guidance for planting, maintaining, and removing trees on public property. Ordinance 122 was established in 2000 and can be viewed HERE.
  3. A Community Forestry Program with an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita
Demonstrating fiscal support for tree planting and maintenance, ensuring a healthy urban canopy. In FY24 the Town exceeded this annual budget with a WHOPPING $40.32 spent per capita.
  4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation
Celebrating trees and community efforts to protect them, usually through public events, education, or ceremonial plantings.  The Town of Berwyn Heights offers a wide variety of programs to help our urban forest, such as tree care classes, free tree plantings on private property, and arborist evaluations of trees both on private property and in the public right of way.
Why It Matters: The Benefits of Being a Tree City

Environmental Health
Trees improve air quality, manage stormwater, reduce the heat island effect, and provide habitat for wildlife.

Community Well-Being
Green spaces promote mental health, encourage outdoor activity, and foster a sense of pride and identity.

Economic Value
Tree-lined streets and shaded neighborhoods increase property values and attract businesses.

Educational Opportunities
Being a Tree City encourages environmental education in schools and through community programs.

Our Commitment to the Future
The Town of Berwyn Heights has been a Tree City for 29 years and Counting!  We are proud of our communities commitment to urban forestry and maintaining the tree canopy for generations to come.  Trees are essential infrastructure—just like roads or water lines—and we’re dedicated to growing a healthier, more resilient, and more beautiful community.
