WMATA Budget Survey

Encuesta presupuestaria de METRO

The Covid-19 pandemic has cost Metro hundreds of millions of dollars.  Ridership remains extremely low, and safety precautions put in place to protect the health of employees and customers have added new expenses. The service provided today is only possible due to emergency federal funding in the CARES Act, but that money will soon run out.  Without additional federal help, Metro will have to use every option to cover a budget shortfall of more than $200 million and they are proposing to:

  • Resume fare collection on Metrobus
  • Limit use of contractors
  • Furlough employees
  • Defer some capital program expenses
  • Cut Metrorail service, close stations earlier
  • Reduce Metrobus service levels and hours
  • Eliminate Metrobus routes (including the B30 to BWI)
