Yard Waste, Compost, Refuse & Recyclables

Household Trash
Berwyn Heights Public Works collects regular household trash twice a week on Mondays (north of Pontiac Street) or Tuesdays (south of Pontiac Street) and Thursdays (entire Town). Household trash must be set out by 6:30 am in a trash can with a tight fitting lid. Construction waste is not accepted.

Bulk Trash
Berwyn Heights Public Works collects bulk trash once a week on Mondays (north of Pontiac Street) or Tuesdays (south of Pontiac Street). Bulk trash includes furniture, matresses, bycycles, garden tools, etc. Removal of large amounts of bulk trash (more than 3 cubic yards), such as may result from cleanout of rental apartments, requires making an appointment with Public Works and payment of a fee. Recyclables
Berwyn Heights Public Works collects recyclables once a week on Wednesdays. Recyclables must be set out in a Town-approved recycling container, which can be obtained by contacting publicworks@berwynheightsmd.gov or calling 301-474-6897. Recyclables include most paper and cardboard, most types of plastic and glass containers and metal cans. Recyclables should be cleaned from food residue. Please see list of recyclables here.

Yard Waste
Berwyn Heights Public Works collects yard waste once a week on Mondays (north of Pontiac Street) or Tuesdays (south of Pontiac Street). Yard waste includes grass, clippings, weeds, leaves, and tree branches. Yard waste must be placed into brown paper yard waste bags or trash containers labeled "yard waste." Please Do Not place waste into plastic trash bags. Branches should not exceed 4 feet in length, and 4 inches in diameter. They must be tied into bundles, not exceeding 2 ½ feet in diameter, and weighing no more than 50 pounds. Bamboo must be set out separately from other yard waste.

Food Scraps                                                                                                                                                                   Berwyn Heights collects food scraps once a week on the same day as Yard Waste, Mondays (north of Pontiac Street) or Tuesdays (south of Pontiac Street).

Please place food scraps in one of the following containers:

  • Compostable green bag (not plastic- must be compostable)
  • If dry and it can be done in a sanitary non-leaking manner, they can go in a brown paper yard waste bag (can be mixed with yard waste)
  • 5-gallon bucket or 12-gallon can

Food scraps that can be accepted by the Compost Facility:

  • All food items, such as vegetables, breads and starches, meat and bones
  • Compostable or biodegradable bags
  •  Can be combined with yard waste
  • Grease is not acceptable

Public Works crews will not handle loose food scraps left in an unsanitary state, so please place food scraps in one of the above manners in a way that will not require workers to touch the food scraps. Leaking bags with holes, etc, will be responsibility of residents to correct before they will be picked up.

 

Other Refuse

Appliances & Tires
Berwyn Heights Public Works collects appliances and tires for a fee. Please fill out an appliance/ tire pickup request form and pay the applicable fee ($25 for appliances, $5 for tires). Cash, Check or credit card payment are accepted at Town Hall located at 5700 Berwyn Road or checks can be sent in the mail.

Bamboo
Berwyn Heights discourages the planting of bamboo, an invasive grass. Property owners who have bamboo in their yard are responsible for containing it within 2 feet of their property line. To dispose of bamboo, please bundle it and set it out separately from other yard waste on Monday (north of Pontiac Street) or Tuesday (south of Pontiac Street).

Electronics, Paints, Styrofoam
Berwyn Heights utilizes the City of Greenbelt's program for recycling old electronics, block Styrofoam and paint. Residents can drop off their recyclables from 9:00 am - 12 noon on the 4th Saturday of January, April, July and October at Greenbelt's Public Works yard, located at Buddy Attick parking lot, 555 Crescent Road. Used batteries and fluorescent light bulbs can be dropped off in special containers located at Town Hall.

Hazardous Waste
Berwyn Heights Public Works does not collect hazardous waste. The following items are considered hazardous: ammunition, acid car batteries, automotive fluids and fuels, cleaning agents, cooking oil, driveway sealers, fire extinguishers, fluorescent light bulbs, household batteries, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers, mercury and other hazardous materials, oil-based paints, photographic chemicals, poisons, propane and helium tanks, solvents, varnishes and stains, swimming pool chemicals.

Mulch/ Smartleaf
The City of College Park Public Works Department sells SMARTLEAF®, a mulch made from composted leaves. SMARTLEAF® is a screened product with particle sizes ½ inch or less and a pH between 7.4 and 8.0, making it suitable as top grade dressing. Please visit the College Park website for details or to schedule a delivery.
