Services & Programs

  • BH Stickers: BHPD makes available free Town ID stickers for vehicles registered to Town residents. The stickers can be obtained at the police station upon presenting your vehicle registration papers.
     
  • Bicycle registration: BHPD has a bicycle registration program to help retrieve a bicycle if it is stolen. See also https://www.nationalbikeregistry.com/register.html
     
  • Community Mediation: PGC Community Relations offers a conflict resolution service in which impartial mediators guide parties in conflict through an informal dialogue to make decisions about how to best resolve their disputes. It is a confidential and voluntary process free of charge. The office collaborates with a wide range of mediation organizations.
     
  • Dispute Resolution: PGC Human Relations Commission has an Alternative Dispute Resolution Program for discrimination cases. This office arranges a meeting between Complainant and Respondent wherein a neutral in-house mediator assists the parties in reaching an agreement to resolve the dispute.
     
  • District Court of Maryland: The District Court of Maryland has jurisdiction over all landlord tenant cases, replevin actions, motor vehicle violations, misdemeanors and certain felonies. In civil cases the District Court has exclusive jurisdiction in claims for $5,000 or less, and concurrent jurisdiction with the circuit courts in claims for amounts above $5,000 but less than $30,000.  
     
  • Finger printing: BHPD stopped providing finger-printing services as of April 15, 2012. All finger-printing services must be done at a facility with a live scan machine. No paper prints will be available at the BHPD, unless authorized by the Chief of Police.
     
  • House Check Requests BHPD will on request check on your home when you are away for an extended period. Please click here to submit a webform, or download the .pdf application.
     
  • Impounded vehicles: Vehicles impounded by the Berwyn Heights Police Department are towed and stored by the Greenbelt Shell Service Station. Prior to retrieving your vehicle, a VEHICLE RELEASE form must be obtained from the Berwyn Heights Police Department, Mon – Fri, 9am - 5pm. The fee for a VEHICLE RELEASE is $75.00 (Cash or Money Order Only). Vehicle towing and storage charges are additional. Impound lot is located at:

  • Juvenile curfews: BHPD enforces the juvenile curfew law. Curfews are in effect SUN-THU 10pm-5am and FRI-SAT 12am-5am to youth under the age of 17. Exceptions apply.

  • Maryland Vehicle Administration: Please visit the MVA website for information about obtaining drivers licenses and vehicle registrations.

  • NIXLE Alerts: BHPD utilizes NIXLE to send local public safety messages to those who sign up for the service

  • Notary Public: BHPD has a commissioned notary public on staff to witness certain types of legal documents. The service is available at the BHPD station during normal business hours. The fee is $4.00 per document notarized.

  • Parking citations: BHPD issues fines for vehicles violating Berwyn Heights parking regulations as set forth in Ordinance 119 – Traffic & Parking [link to ORD 119]. Tickets can be paid at the police station located at 5411 Berwyn Road, Berwyn Heights, MD, during normal business hours.

  • Police Reports: BHPD files reports on crimes and accidents that occur in Berwyn Heights. Copies of police reports are made available upon request, usually within 24-48 hours after an incident occurred. The fee for an accident report is $10.00 for a resident and $20 for non-residents. The fee for a police report is free for a resident and $15 for a non-resident (cash and money orders only). They can be picked up at the police station located at 5411, Berwyn Road, Berwyn Heights, MD.

  • Public Safety Aide program: BHPD sponsors a Public Safety Aide (PSA) program, which is comprised of young men or women aged 14 to 21, or older, who perform various police support services under supervision of a designated officer. Police aides are volunteers and not authorized to perform any type of law enforcement activity.

  • Neighborhood Watch program: BHPD works with the Neighborhood Watch/ Emergency Preparedness Committee volunteers to monitor the community for activities that have potential public safety implications and to educate citizens on home safety and emergency preparedness.

  • Speed Cameras: In accordance with Maryland law, the BHPD uses speed cameras to enforce the 20 mph speed limit between 7 am to 6 pm in the Berwyn Heights Elementary school zone, and the 40 mph speed limit for Greenbelt Middle School when lights are flashing on Greenbelt Road (Berwyn Heights’ side of Greenbelt Road only).

  • Vehicle Accident Reports: BHPD will issue copies of accident reports for motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the Town of Berwyn Heights, at a cost of $10 for a resident and $20 for non-residents (Cash or Money Order only). A copy of the report is generally available 24-48 hours after an accident occurred, and can be picked up at the Berwyn Heights Police Department Headquarters - 5411 Berwyn Road - Berwyn Heights, MD during normal business hours.

  • Vehicle Safety Equipment Repair Orders: An order issued by a police officer to the owners of Maryland-registered vehicles to repair broken or malfunctioning safety equipment. Vehicle safety equipment violations must be corrected within ten days of notice, or the vehicle registration (tags) will be suspended. When the safety equipment problems have been corrected, the vehicle must be inspected, and a copy of the vehicle repair order form signed by the inspector must be mailed to the Maryland State Police-Automotive Safety Equipment Division (ASED) within thirty days of notice.

  • Victims’ Assistance: The State of Maryland and Prince George’s County offer a range of victims’ assistance programs. Please visit the Office of Attorney General’s website to find information about victim services, or the directory of victim assistance programs for county level information.
