Food Assistance Information

Prince Georges County Public Schools

School meals are free for all Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) students this school year, but families still need to submit the Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FARMS) application at the beginning of each school year to remain eligible.  These applications are due by Sunday, October 31.  Students and their families do not have to be U.S. citizens to receive meal benefits.   For more information, call 301-952-6517 or go to https://www.pgcps.org/offices/food-and-nutrition/free-and-reduced-meals

Beginning the week of October 4, PGCPS will discontinue the distribution of student suppers outside of Before and After School Enrichment programs due to supply shortages. With meals being free for all students nationwide, increased demand has placed a strain on food companies.  Free breakfast and lunch for all students will continue in schools daily along with weekly meal distribution for virtual learning students.  The closest weekly meal distribution site is Greenbelt Middle School. Families should anticipate menu changes and meal substitutions in light of the supply shortage.

Food Purchasing Assistance

Effective October 1, 2021, individuals receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will see a change in their amounts. The change includes a cost-of-living adjustment, and a notice regarding the federal Emergency Allotment.  Maryland has issued monthly Emergency Allotments to SNAP recipients since April 2020. This additional SNAP funding was made possible by a temporary change in federal law designed to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPORTANT: Future Emergency Allotment benefits will be determined at the federal level by the USDA on a month-to-month basis. Emergency Allotment benefits are not intended to be permanent. If the federal government discontinues EA benefits, SNAP recipients will continue to receive their standard SNAP benefits - this would mean a reduction in the amount of SNAP assistance received each month. Standard SNAP benefits are calculated based on household size, income & expenses, and assets.
