Investigative Services

Mission & Responsibilities

The Investigative Services Section of the Berwyn Heights Police Department is led by Detective Corporal Daniel Unger. He is the primary investigating officer for all crimes committed within the jurisdiction of Berwyn Heights, with the exception of Murder, 1st Degree Rape and Armed Robberies. In these cases, a Berwyn Heights patrol officer handles the initial crime report, and Detective Unger functions as the secondary investigator along with the Prince George's County Police Department Investigative Section, who act as the lead investigating agency, as per a "Memorandum of Understanding" between the two departments.

The Berwyn Heights Police Department's Investigative Services also handles any internal investigations, and to a certain degree, civil cases, particularly those dealing with bad or fraudulent checks. Like most agencies, the Berwyn Heights Police Department's Investigative Services has recently seen a huge increase in credit card fraud and identity theft, with many of those cases originating from unauthorized charges placed over the internet.

Det. Unger came to the Berwyn Heights Police Department in 2007 and earned Officer of the Year in 2008. He has recently been promoted to Detective Corporal, and is now assigned to the United States Secret Service Metropolitan Area Fraud Task Force. In addition, Det. Unger has been granted a United States Marshal status which gives him a nationwide jurisdiction.
